Diagnostic Runtime Engine, DRE, is a standalone diagnostics framework for embedded control and information systems. It enables easy development of customised diagnostic functionality for fault detection, prognostics and system information. DRE enables extensive diagnostics of a control system and also moves the system in the direction of prognostics.

The DRE is a standalone application that can be executed in parallel to a control system in an embedded system. The framework reads all diagnostic functions from an externally compiled component. This component can be developed by a customer according to the specified interface, which describes inputs, outputs and parameter settings used by the functions. The framework connects the functions to signals from the data bus and to system actions.

The Runtime Engine is designed to enable logging of trends and to use these trends as feedback into the system, which enables prognostication.

The Runtime Engine is at the moment available for Windows CE, but can be easily ported into other environments.
